Pirelli Switches to 18-in. Tire for Trans Am Series

Pirelli Tire North America recently announced a new 18-inch size for the Trans Am Series TA class. The size will bring the company’s motorsports tires close to the road tire production process and in line with what is taking place in Formula One.

The new P Zero Trans Am TA class tires will switch to an 18-inch diameter from the previous 16-inch due to the growing emphasis on aesthetic and technological proximity to road products. The sidewall will receive the most significant change and resemble low-profile Pirelli tires.

According to the company, the development of the tires started in 2019. Tests were carried out at the Road Atlanta Raceway before things came to a halt in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Testing resumed in 2021 with activities being carried out at Virginia International Raceway and Road America. Another session was scheduled at Homestead Miami Speedway on Nov. 22 to finish the development.

For the coming year, Trans Am competitors will use the new P Zero DH tires. These are an upgrade from the previous range. They are modified to be more versatile for several types of Trans Am cars.
