Continental launches aContact tires for autonomous fleets and robotaxis

Continental Tire has unveiled aContact, a new tire line engineered for autonomous vehicles, such as robotaxis, shuttles, and last-mile delivery fleets. The first sets are slated to hit U.S. roads in Las Vegas and San Francisco.

Meletis Xigakis, who leads R&D for Continental’s original-equipment business, says autonomous driving is moving into everyday life and tires have to evolve with it. For vehicles that run long hours on predictable routes, efficiency and safety are the priorities.

What’s inside aContact

  • Shorter braking distances and confident wet-road grip
  • Low rolling resistance to extend EV range
  • Use-case tuning: tread patterns and compounds adapted for heavy commuter traffic or airport shuttles.
  • Optional reinforced sidewalls; taller, narrower profiles to manage EV battery weight and improve stability
  • Reduced road noise to keep quiet electric cabins comfortable

As fleets shift from human drivers to AI systems, tires must deliver consistent performance over long duty cycles. Continental says aContact is built for that reality and is already being supplied with specs customized to operator needs in major markets across North America and China. Sustainability is also in scope, with new materials, resource-efficient manufacturing, and lifecycle improvements.
