Continental has introduced its latest city bus tire, the Conti Urban HA 5 NXT, at Busworld Europe in Brussels. This tire contains up to 60 percent renewable, recycled, and ISCC PLUS mass-balance-certified materials, highlighting Continental’s commitment to sustainable urban transportation.
The new tire cuts rolling resistance by 25 percent compared to the previous model, allowing electric buses to travel up to 15 percent farther. A new tread compound also offers 15 percent more mileage than the Conti Urban HA 3, while still achieving a strong EU label class B for wet grip.
Continental noted that the Conti Urban HA 5 NXT tackles the specific challenges of city driving, which include frequent stops, curbs, and narrow streets. It also supports the EU’s goal of zero-emission buses by 2030.
Featuring pre-installed sensors, the Continental tire works well with the company’s ContiConnect digital tire management system. This system provides fleet operators with real-time data on pressure, temperature, and mileage, allowing for predictive maintenance. This capability can help reduce downtime and lower operating costs.
Company leaders pointed out that the new tire offers both environmental benefits and operational efficiency. “Our customers want solutions that are good for the environment and their budgets. The Conti Urban HA 5 NXT meets both needs,” said Leo Kolodziej, Head of Original Equipment Bus and Truck Tires EMEA.
A lifecycle assessment shows an 11 percent drop in greenhouse gas emissions compared to the earlier model, due to materials like natural rubber, renewable fillers, recycled synthetic rubber, and reclaimed rubber from used tires.
The Conti Urban HA 5 NXT is initially available in size 275/70 R 22.5 and adds to the company’s expanding range of solutions for sustainable public transportation.
Continental will display the new tire, along with other innovations for buses and vans, from October 4 to 9, 2025, at Busworld Europe in Brussels.
