Cornwall, Ontario, has solidified its status as a vital link in Canada’s supply chain as Michelin recently acquired a 91,416-square-metre (984,000-square-foot) distribution facility in the Cornwall Business Park.
The global tire manufacturer purchased the custom-built facility from Montreal-based developer Broccolini in late 2024. Once fully operational, the site is expected to employ approximately 140 people, reinforcing Cornwall’s economic growth.
Michelin spokesperson Nicolle Vuoto shared that the company is enthusiastic about opening the new distribution center, emphasizing that the centralized, modern facility will streamline the supply chain, improve customer service, and reduce the company’s environmental impact.
Construction at the site concluded in October 2024, with the facility becoming operational shortly afterward. The official opening is scheduled for July. The sale of the property made headlines in the construction industry press in December 2024.
Cornwall’s Growing Industrial Footprint
The distribution hub is situated near Tenth Street and Industrial Park Drive. Broccolini’s Vice-President for Acquisitions and Investments, Toni Wodzicki, highlighted the strategic importance of Cornwall as a logistical hub in Eastern Canada. He stated that the company’s goal was to promote large-scale employment development in the area.
The site was previously owned by Loblaw Companies Ltd., which shifted its logistics operations to the Matrix distribution center after acquiring Shoppers Drug Mart in 2014. Broccolini acquired 80 acres in Cornwall Business Park in 2022 and still holds 17 acres of the land.
Innovative Facility Design
Wodzicki described the Michelin facility as architecturally distinct from typical distribution centers. It consists of two separate buildings linked by covered pathways, a design choice driven by insurance and fire risk considerations for tire storage.
Michelin’s Canadian Expansion
Despite economic challenges, Michelin remains committed to Cornwall due to its logistical advantages. Wodzicki noted that the demand for tires is consistent and crucial, making the facility a strategic asset for Michelin’s Canadian operations.
Michelin, a multinational corporation with a legacy spanning over 130 years, has its global headquarters in France and North American operations based in South Carolina. The primary manufacturing hub for Michelin tires in Canada is located in Nova Scotia. The Cornwall distribution center will play a critical role in serving the entire Canadian market.
