Pirelli Unveils New Rear Tire Options for Moto2 at Jerez Grand Prix

Pirelli launched two new rear tire options for the Moto2 category, launching them at the Jerez Spanish Grand Prix. The Pirelli tires include a standard soft option and a supersoft SCX compound, intended to provide better performance for the riders throughout the season.

The soft tire, formerly known as the D0640 development spec, will now be known as the SC0 from now on, officially establishing it as the standard soft tire. Concurrently, the new SCX compound, even softer than the SC0, will be the softest tire choice that Moto2 riders will have to choose from. The SCX tire will be available as an alternative to or in addition to the medium SC1 at some Grand Prix events in the 2025 season where the temperature and conditions at the track are suitable.

Giorgio Barbier, the motorcycle racing director at Pirelli, stated that the SCX compound, while new for Moto2, has been applied with great success over the past few years in the Superbike World Championship, where it is now the most used rear tire option. He pointed out that while this tire is not so new, it is a specialist version developed for the Moto2 riders, and they were given the chance to try it during the track testing in February with positive results.

Barbier continued to describe how, due to the extremely soft nature of the SCX compound, it would not be suitable for all Grand Prix events. The tire’s performance is heavily dependent on factors such as the nature of the track, its layout, and ambient temperatures. In the event of too low temperatures, the tire could suffer from overwear, causing its effectiveness to decrease.

In addition to the SCX, the SC0 is to replace development tire D0640 with immediate effect by Pirelli from the race in Jerez. It’s all in an effort by the company to continue innovating on its technologies by keeping its products fresh. This will not only benefit professional racers but even amateur enthusiasts. Its involvement in quite a considerable number of championships encourages the developers of technology to continue bettering performance, with one championship inspiring one to crave and accomplish even better things in innovation.
