Eight-Year Partnership Between Michelin and Formula E Ends

The FIA World Formula E Championships is parting ways with Michelin Group after eight years. The French tire manufacturer announced on 18 Aug that they were withdrawing from the event. The announcement came from the founding partner and investor who took it on in 2013.

It follows the end of the 2021/2022 campaign that ended on 14 Aug. Hankook tires will take Michelin’s place as Gen3 partner for the 2022/23 season. The Gen3 will boast a new drive, less weight, and offer more power.

After being associated with the first electric single-seater racing series, Michelin said that the partnership led to advances in technology across “the exceptionally wide spectrum of conditions”. Some of the innovations that came courtesy of Michelin include advanced tire weights and energy efficiency.

Tire weights dropped by 16% in the first two years of the partnership. In 2018, tire weights had reduced by 2.5 kgs to help extend vehicles’ range.
